Typewriter Case Mod
Submitted by jj on Sat, 04/24/2004 - 04:00.Now this is a cool case mode. This guy put a mini-ITX motherboard into an antique typewriter. From the outside (until you look at the back where the connectors are), it looks almost exactly like the original. This would be a cool computer to have sitting on my desk at work.
Photorealistic Images with POV-Ray
Submitted by jj on Tue, 04/20/2004 - 22:26.For those of you that have never heard of, or seen images created by POV-Ray (Persistence of Vision Raytracer), check out their home page. Look through their gallery of photo realistic images created by this program (which was first released way back in 1989). Better yet, try out the tutorial, it's very easy to create a basic, 3D, photorealistic scene. And best of all, it's free and open source!
Geek Gym
Submitted by jj on Mon, 04/19/2004 - 04:00.Here's a self proclaimed running geek his site shows how he keeps exercise interesting. From his GPS watch and iPod, to cool geek gym with an LCD, XBox, and Dance Dance Revolution mat, he almost has me convinced exercise might be fun. My only recommendation would be to upgrade his DDR mat to one of these metal mats with handle :).
Build a Segway
Submitted by jj on Sun, 04/18/2004 - 00:03.Now this project is cool. This guy built a Segway. Not just a motorized scooter, but a 2 wheeled, self balancing scooter, very much like a Segway. He's got some interesting ideas for future projects too - "I wonder if I could learn to control it without a handlebar at all. Perhaps with some sort of ski boots & bindings for greater control." - I see a future extreme sport in the making there :) Check out some pretty interesting robot links at the bottom of his page.
Ultimate Game Console Case Mod
Submitted by jj on Sun, 04/18/2004 - 00:03.This article at TechTV shows a guy that put 5 consoles (Atari 2600, PS2, GameCube, XBox, and basic NES) and a PC into one case. Considering the amount of time and effort involved in this one, he goes into pretty good detail regarding the steps he took to get this done, and the basics of creating one yourself.
Build a Digital Picture Frame
Submitted by jj on Fri, 04/16/2004 - 18:13.Here's an article at Popular Science that shows you how to build a digital picture frame. The article is fairly basic and covers the software more than actually constructing the frame, but he does present some good ideas.
I always thought the 3Com Audrey (3Com's web appliance that flopped a few years back) would make a cool digital picture frame. I see them on eBay sometimes for around $100. Maybe when they're a bit cheaper I'll pick one up.
Just an aside, here's a digital picture frame for the really lazy :)
Reclining Workstation
Submitted by geekdiy on Wed, 04/14/2004 - 21:52.I recently purchased a new home, so many of my up and coming projects will probably be related to technology within the home. Project #1 is to convert my bedroom walk-in closet to an office and setup my workstation. Comfortable, and flexible to support multiple machines (Linux desktop, Windows desktop, and laptop from work at a minimum).
Hack your car engine
Submitted by jj on Wed, 04/14/2004 - 21:52.Add horsepower and torque into your engine just by upgrading your car's computer chip. According to this New York Times article (free registration required) people are adding aftermarket "performance chips" into their cars to add power. This looks like one of those hacks I wouldn't even try (considering I don't even change my own oil). But for those who aren't afraid of getting under the hood (and risking thousands of dollars in repairs), this one does look interesting.
