Make a Light Saber

This site shows you how to make your own light saber. Very good, detailed instructions. Judging from the pictures, this actually makes a very professional looking light saber. Edmunds Scientific has a kit you can buy to make your own light saber as well. According to the description, it uses neon lighting, and when you touch the contact probes on the handle, the light actually flows up the blade - Very Cool!

Cool Paper Airplanes

Here are two very cool paper airplanes. The first is self-described as The Best Paper Airplane in the World. It's a cool looking airplane, but more interesting is it's flight characteristics. The author describes it as flying more like a balsa wood plane, rather than a paper plane. The second makes its way to us via Boing Boing. Called The Flapper, this one is interesting because it actually flaps its wings while flying.

Unix on GBA

Another great project by way of BoingBoing.net that shows you how to run unix on a GameBoy Advance. There's probably not a whole lot you can do with Unix on a GBA, so some would ask "why do it then?", and I think the obvious GeekDIY answer is "because you can :)".

GeekDIY - New Look

We (mostly Gadgeteer working out the many kinks) finally got the new look up and running. There are still some minor CSS issues we're looking at, so if it doesn't look quite right on your browser let us know via the feedback form in the right column. Please indicate your browser, o/s and versions for both.

Thanks to everyone that helped us test the design!

Build an Electric Car

Here's a great resource for those of you that don't just want an electric car, but want to build one yourself. The site itself goes over all the basics you need to convert a car to use electric instead of gas. Also includes links to books which will provide you additional details.

Jet Powered Beer Cooler

By way of Quente Cafe we get a link to a very interesting project showing a guy that not only built a jet engine, but uses it to keep his beer cold in his shed. Not a project most of us will be building, but an interesting use of his jet engine. And be careful, as he says "The risks should be obvious but it is worth pointing out that beer is a very dangerous substance when used without due care." If you go up one level of his site, you'll see this is the same guy that brought us Star Wars in Ascii.

Augmented Reality Quake

A bit old, but extremely cool. These guys built "Augmented Reality Quake", basically, put on the backpack and goggles, run around the campus, and see/kill the monsters running around with you and other players. Extremely expensive to build since they had to use very precise tracking equipment, but this would be a great experience.

Mount GMail Storage from Linux

From a posting at P2PNet has a link to a Python app, GmailFS, which allows you to mount your Gmail storage from Linux. This would be a great (and very cool) way to share files from a couple remote machines.

Convert Your Car to Run on Vegetable Oil

This one's not a straight DIY, but rather a kit. Greasecar.com has a kit that allows you to convert a diesel engine into an engine that only uses vegetable oil for fuel, supposedly with no loss in performance or efficiency. Another nice plus is, if you're stuck out in the middle of nowhere with no fuel and no grocery store in sight, you can still switch over to diesel (provided there's a diesel station nearby).

Make 3D Photos

The other day we had posted a link to making a 3D display now an article from EnGadget shows you how to easily make your own 3D photos using a digital camera and free software.
